Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and soak in the aromas around you. Allow the fresh trace of pine forest and wet moss ripening on the rocks to awaken your senses, while the crispness of fertile soil drizzled by light rain invigorate a refreshing feeling. Absorb the warmth of the mountain sunrise emanating angel rays throughout the peaking forest, while dew speckles the grassy field as if painted on like glitter. The towering boulders framing the forest welcome serenity and calm grounding stillness. It’s you, the rocks, and the trees.
The fast pace of the world around you starts to slow down dramatically. Standing on the edge of a boulder, you inhale – your arms towards the sky – and gaze up, only to witness a hawk circling above, off for his early morning prey. His wingspan is directly above yours, as if you are reaching towards the giant bird itself. Time stops as you notice the colors inside the wings all the way to the feather tips, and observe the length of his talons. Exhaling, you feel the sun peeking through the boulders, and the first rays of light softly kiss your cheeks. You glance behind to see the cozy tent you had slumbered in like a hibernating bear the night before.
In this moment, you realize how alive you feel. Your body feels strong. You feel nourished by the fresh organic wholesome food so thoughtfully prepared for you the night before, and your heart is warm from the connections you shared and the newly found friendships forged in your group. Your heart feels presently at peace because there is truly nowhere else you would rather be. It is day three of your retreat in nature – the last day. You have practiced yoga under the morning backlit trees and with the rising moonlight. The soundtrack of howling coyotes, owls hooting, whispering pines, and then dead silence, have echoed a newly found admiration for the forest.
All of these unfamiliarities of nature’s restlessness have left you feeling quite alive and invigorated, but you’re not even sure why. Is it because you tried something new? Is it because you took time to reflect and journal some thoughts on where you are right now in your life? Is it the new friends you've made who also share similar interests of feeling good and living a more balanced life? Is it because you ventured out and took a break from all that you knew? Or is it simply nature?
No matter the answer, a week has passed since your yoga retreat outdoors and this lingering feeling of vitality and aliveness is still knocking at your heart and mind every morning. You realize how good you feel and you don’t want this feeling to go away.
You realize you've finally found the key to overcoming the daily grind and life’s stresses. You swiftly jump out of bed, pack up your bag, fill your water bottle, and grab your boots. Nature is calling, and you know exactly where to go and why you need to be there. It’s refresh and refuel time and there’s nothing else like this healthy dose of mother nature that truly does the body good.
